Keep Britain Tidy: Spring Beach Clean March 2017
This year our Spring Beach Clean was earlier than usual, but we decided to tie in with the Keep Britain Tidy Big Spring Clean http://www.keepbritaintidy.org/the-great-british-spring-clean-is-coming-in-2017 . We based ourselves at the Shoreham Fort and cleaned the area around the Fort, including the surrounds of the Rock Pooling beach, the Fort itself, the shingle area alongside the harbour entrance, the spending beach and from the Harbour Arm to the Burrells roundabout. We were able to do this through the support of McDonalds at Holmbush who sent along a team and some free water and orange juice! They were joined by another 50 people including 13 families. This was a great opportunity to meet children and talk about litter on the beach and the effect it has on the wildlife, thus bringing a little more reason to picking up pieces of plastic and green string. Everybody enjoyed a chance to ” give something back to the beach“
The litter was full of the usual suspects, plastic bottles, rope ends, and assorted sweet/crisp wrappers. An old metal lobster pot was removed and the worst find being a discarded net, tangled and containing 4 dead dogfish. The beach is still a collecting ground for wind blown plastic and there is an increasing amount of dog poo left in bags on the beach ( this, despite there being dog poo bins at every entrance)
Once again Adur council supplied us with bags and cleared the full ones we left at the Fort and Burrells Roundabout and as always we are grateful for their support.
