Gannet
This is a large seabird, and can sometimes be seen off shore, especially when they are moving to and from their breeding grounds in spring and autumn. At sea, they flap and then glide low over the water, often in small groups.
They are a spectacular sight, especially when they are feeding. Look for birds flying and circling high, before plunging into the sea. They mainly eat herring and mackerel, so when these fish are shoaling in the channel, gannets will often arrive in large numbers. Hundreds are possible and a feeding frenzy is a sight that will never be forgotten!
